Harlem’s Gena Bardwell Touro’s Interim Director Of General Education Program

Gena Bardwell photo in harlem1Harlem’s Gena Bardwell, Assistant Professor of Communications at New York School of Career and Applied Studies, (NYSCAS) a division of Touro College & University System, has been appointed to a new position as Interim Director of General Education. Prof. Bardwell has served on Touro’s faculty since 1998. She currently teaches courses in Speech Communication at NYSCAS and Touro Graduate School of Business. As Interim Director of Prof. Bardwell will chair the General Education Committee of the Undergraduate Division, and ensure its effectiveness in realizing the college’s educational objectives.

In her new role, Prof. Bardwell will identify and implement the best educational practices in each of the core areas: English, science, math, and the humanities. “We must move forward in innovative and measurable ways to ensure that our students’ liberal arts education solidly delivers a balance of practical, scientific, humanistic, and critical thinking skills necessary for graduation and for competing in the workforce,” said Prof. Bardwell.

Prof. Bardwell presently serves on the General Education committee, the Faculty Orientation committee, the Faculty Evaluation Council, the NYSCAS Graduation Committee and the Women’s Leadership Council. She formerly taught at New York University’s School of Continuing Education and Professional Studies and at Rutgers University Dept. of Speech Communication.

Previously, Prof. Bardwell was Senior Operations Manager at Scholastic Inc. and Director of Special Events at the New York Historical Society. She is a graduate of Rutgers University, Mason Gross School of the Arts in New Jersey, where she received her MFA. She received her BFA from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri.

Dr. Stanley Boylan, Vice President and Dean of Undergraduate Education and Dean of Faculties at Touro College, has praised Prof. Bardwell’s strong teaching, organizational, and communication skills, noting that her experience in student-centered management will be an asset in her vision and analysis of academic satisfaction surveys, rubric development, and general education assessment outcomes.

“Professor Bardwell brings to her new position a passion for teaching and a deep understanding of the role general education must play in the overall educational process. We look forward to her leadership of General Education at the College and the impact her efforts will ultimately make on the experience of Touro undergraduate students,” said Dean Boylan.
