Melissa-Mark-Viverito1City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito is in the Bronx to celebrate the reopening of the oldest standing bridge in New York City and to tell the amazing story of the 167-year-old historic High Bridge, the emerging Bronx Children’s Museum published Bronx native Sonia Manzano’s heartfelt contribution with fun and colorful illustrations by Noelle S. Gibbons.

.Bronx Children’s Museum entitled The Lowdown on the High Bridge to sixty children from three local public, charter, and parochial schools in preparation of the official re- opening of the iconic High Bridge.. For generations, children living in the Highbridge Bronx area were unaware of the importance of this historic bridge. This book illuminates its magnificent past and beauty as the oldest standing Bridge in New York City. Manzano wrote the book as a gift to the children of the Bronx where she was raised.

A passport from the past into the future, The Lowdown on the High Bridge sheds light on their community’s namesake – the High Bridge- originally designed in 1839 as an aqueduct to transport fresh drinking water from the Croton watershed to the City. Figures such as author Edgar Allen Poe grace the pages of the book and are seen walking on the Bridge from Manhattan to the Bronx. The book will be donated during the month of June by the Bronx Children’s Museum as a present to 3,300 pre-K to third graders attending eight Highbridge Schools where the Museum has been operating over the past two years, teaching area children about their history and the Harlem River

Following the reading, Manzano will lead all 60 students on a walk to the Bridge where they will be greeted by the Bronx Borough President, Ruben Diaz, Jr., Speaker Mark-Viverito and the Commissioners of the NYC Department of Design and Construction and NYC Parks and Recreation. There will be a photo op for press with Manzano and the children at the head of the bridge. She will then give children the book and launch an official countdown to the High Bridge’s official opening to the public.  In case of rain, they will remain at the school.

9:00 a.m. Reading begins at P.S. 11

9:45 a.m. Meet at Highbridge Park, Dr. Matin Luther King Jr. Blvd. at West 170th Street. In case of rain, event will remain at the school
