NY Daily News reports that fifty years ago Tuesday, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., delivered a fiery take down of America’s military intervention in Vietnam.
Delivered at Harlem’s Riverside Church on April 4, 1967, “Beyond Vietnam” was a controversial call to end the war — and a year later, King was assassinated.
Riverside Church will commemorate the 50th anniversary of that speech — and the 49th of King’s death — with author Michelle Alexander and activist Ruby Sales starting at 7 p.m.
Also Tuesday, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta will host the annual “King Remembrance Day” event.
The National Park Service will open King’s home for tours and his daughter, Rev. Bernice King, will be at a wreath-laying ceremony at Ebenezer Baptist Church.
King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee while in town to support striking sanitation workers.
Activists with Fight for $15 and Black Lives Matter will be on the streets for a moment of silence at 6:01 p.m. central time — when he was shot — to honor his efforts to eradicate poverty and protect civil rights.
