Harlem’s Vlone Hits The Rue Cambon On Chanel’s Doorstep

June 26, 2017

This weekend on Rue Cambon there was a queue even bigger than the one outside Chanel. That probably hasn’t happened since Coco set up shop in 1910. The reason? The arrival in Paris of the A$AP Mob’s clothing label Vlone on the Paris schedule.

It was great to see a Harlem-born brand, and a young one too, premier in the world’s capital of fashion: That’s both good for the label and good for Paris. New blood = new life. The crowd was the best; A$AP Rocky, Russell Westbrook, Virgil Abloh, Skepta, and more. It felt fresh before look one.

The vibe was guerrilla and endearingly shambolic. The show started beyond late and the music kept cutting out. The only soundtrack at one point was a guy shouting, “where’s the fucking music?!” from backstage, which was funny. It has to be said that the most important thing—the clothes—demanded rigorous editing and styling. Labels stuck out from the back of black leather side-laced pants. A white shirt was stained on the back. There was no need to present five or so versions of the same denim jacket and jean—for both women and men—with only the color of their lettering to differentiate one look from the last. Unless, that is, the only point of them was to showcase the Vlone collab Air Force 1’s worn below.

The cameo reference slogan shirts, the V-branded shirts, and the smiley face desert camo pieces were, in contrast, direct and appealing. Backstage, A$AP Bari—aka Young Lord—was effusive: “It’s natural,” he said of his arrival here: “I like clothes. I just wanted to present.”  Watch out, Coco—there’s a new label on your corner.
