Hey Harlem, Knight Foundation Is Offering Summer 2018 Internships

January 24, 2018

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is mission driven and results oriented. We were established by our founders to support informed and engaged communities.

We value innovation and initiative, teamwork and transparency, all toward achieving positive impact and progress in our field of work. We take our core beliefs from the life and work of the Knight brothers and express them this way:

  • We believe in freedom of expression and in the values expressed in the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.
  • We believe that quality information is essential for individuals and communities to make their own best choices, and that journalism plays a critical role in that democratic process.
  • We believe in equitable, inclusive and participatory communities.

We are seeking up to seven paid summer interns with vision, tenacity, courage, know-how, and a commitment to discovery who will tackle substantive projects in journalism, media technology, arts or civic engagement.

Selected interns will spend 10 weeks (June 4 to Aug. 10, 2018) in Miami.  Select opportunities may be available within our communities program in one of our other resident communities (Akron, Ohio, Charlotte, N.C., Detroit, Macon, Georgia, Philadelphia, San Jose, California and St. Paul, Minnesota). Note that Knight Foundation cannot pay for housing or relocation costs related to the internship placement.

Intern applications will be accepted from Dec. 18, 2017 – Jan. 31, 2018. Please submit your resume or C.V. and a cover letter, not to exceed two pages, to internship@knightfoundation.org.

Finalists will be notified in early February 2018.  If selected as a finalist, you will be provided with project descriptions and invited to interview with the project lead in late February. Selected interns will be informed in early March 2018.

Knight Foundation is a national foundation with strong local roots. We invest in journalism, in the arts, and in the success of cities where brothers John S. and James L. Knight once published newspapers. Our goal is to foster informed and engaged communities, which we believe are essential for a healthy democracy.

The essential elements for this work are: belief in a vision, courage to push for change, willingness to explore new ideas, expertise to accomplish the work and tenacity to reach the desired results. If you share this passion, we want to hear from you. Tell us what excites you about this opportunity and why you are right for it.
