The driver that struck a 19-year-old man in Morningside Heights on Monday morning and then left the scene has turned himself into police, an NYPD spokesman told source.

A 28-year-old man — who police have not identified — showed up to the 26th Police Precinct around 4:20 a.m. Tuesday and confessed to the hit and run, the NYPD spokesman told source. The man’s charges are pending, police said.

The 19-year-old victim, who has not been identified, was walking in the intersection of Riverside Drive and West 115th Street around 12:25 a.m. when he was hit by a vehicle driving north on Riverside Drive, police told source. Police responded to the scene and discovered the victim suffering critical injuries to the head and legs, police said.

The victim was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in critical condition, police said. The victim’s current condition could not be confirmed Tuesday by police. Multiple reports have stated the victim is a student at Columbia University, but the NYPD were unable to confirm this detail with Patch.

Police released video footage of the moments before the collision on Monday afternoon. The victim can be seen walking in the intersection, unaware of the vehicle approaching him. The victim takes about five steps into the intersection before turning his attention to the vehicle, which is about to strike him, according to the NYPD video. It is unknown who had the right of way, police said.
