November 30, 2016

city-college-in-harlem1Internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer Júlio T. Leitão and his celebrated youth dance group Batoto Yetu are bringing holiday cheer to New York and the City College Center for the Arts (CCCA) in Harlem. Batoto Yetu (Swahili for “Our Children”), a group of talented youngsters who have performed over the years with entertainment giants including Michael Jackson, Harry Belafonte, Whitney Houston and Usher, will bring a splash of African music and dance at Aaron Davis Hall on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at 5 p.m EST.

Batoto Yetu was created by Júlio T. Leitão in 1990 to use African dance, music and folklore to help children from disadvantaged communities engage in the performing arts and to promote self-esteem. Beginning with a small group of seven children, the group quickly achieved notice and acclaim in New York City and beyond. From its initial public performance at the United Nations, Batoto Yetu has gone on to delight audiences in Brazil, England, Spain, Hong Kong and Angola. The dancers have captivated audiences of all backgrounds and taught children around the globe the power of culture and art in developing confidence and self-motivation.

“Batoto Yetu is the perfect way to celebrate the holidays. The dancers, with their colorful costumes and dramatic makeup moving to the rhythm of the live music, will fill you to the brim with the joy of the season,” said CCCA Managing Director Gregory Shanck.

Tickets for the event are $15 for adults and $10 for children and can be purchased online at http://www.citycollegecenterforthearts.org or through the box office by telephone at (212) 650-6900 or in person (Tuesday through Friday from 12 noon to 6 p.m.). Aaron Davis Hall is located on the campus of the City College of New York, at West 135th Street and Convent Avenue (129 Convent Avenue).
