HW Pick: Al B. Sure Headlines “Arts On Third” Festival In Mount Vernon

al b sureSunday,  September  6th,  1pm-7pm,  Mount  Vernon’s Mayor, The Honorable Ernest Davis and the Mount Vernon Arts Council present “ArtsOn Third”…Westchester’s  premier  arts  &  entertainment  festival.   Headlining  this year’s festival is Mount Vernon’s own Al. B. Sure.

Al  B. Sure  (born Albert Joseph Brown III) , a former Mount Vernon High School QB,rejected an athletic scholarship to pursue his music career.   After being selected byQuincy Jones as the first  winner  of  the “Sony Innovators Talent  Search”,  his  debutalbum “In Effect Mode” sold more than 2 million copies and topped the music charts forseven weeks.  Sure went on to become a three time Grammy nominated R& B singer and a major producer of the “ New Jack Swing” era. As a writer and producer, Sure iscredited  for  introducing  to  the  music  world,  recording  artists,  Jodeci ,  TevinCampbell  Faith Evans, Dave Hollister, Case, and Usher.

Sure’s  other  accomplishments  include  launching  a  television  division,  ABSEntertainment and teaming up with the ABC Radio Network to produced and host aromantic nighttime show, “The Secret Garden.   He currently has a daily morning radio show on iHeart Radio and can be seen performing live at this year’s “Arts on Third” festival on September 6th.

Also, on the bill are Roxanne Shante, reggae artist, Red Fox, GQ of “Disco Nights” fame, singer/actress, Cheryl “Pepsi” Riley known for her hit, “Thanks for My Child” and back by popular demand is Latin sensation, Tito Puente Jr.,  and crowd favorite, Doug E. Fresh.

The free family friendly event spans over six city blocks with various activities such as the Children’s Village featuring interactive games, arts; crafts and storytelling; Artists Row where visual artists exhibit their handcrafted art and authors are on hand for book signings and readings: the Pedestrian Mall with over 100 merchandise vendors and the“Healthy Living Pavilion” for  attendees to receive free screenings and obtain holistic health and wellness information.

This year’s health focus is “Domestic Violence Awareness”. Every minute, 20 people are victims of  intimate partner abuse.   85 percent of domestic abuse victims are women and  15  percent  are  men.  Mount  Vernon  ranks  high  amongst  domestic  violence incidents in Westchester County.  The Arts on Third;  health focus is to shed light on  this  fact,  encourage  the  community  to  break  the  silence  and  aid  in  ending  the violence.

Presented by Mount Vernon’s Mayor, The Honorable Ernest Davis, The Mount Vernon Arts& Culture Council, McDonald’s and Montefiore Hospital, “Arts On Third” is now one of lower Westchester’s largest and most prestigious cultural celebrations attracting over 70,000 attendees.
