HW Pick: Falu’s Mumbai Swag (video)

February 25, 2014

FaluFalu (aka Falguni Shah) is internationally recognized vocalist from Mumbai, Indian, known for her rare ability to seamlessly blend a modern, inventive style with more classical Indian styles. In her early years Falu trained rigorously, up to 16 hours a day, in the Jaipur musical tradition and the Benares style of Thumrie. She continued studying under the late sarangi vocal master Ustad Sultan Khan, and continues to study with the legendary Smt. Kishori Amonkar. Falu moved to Boston in 2000 where she taught Indian Classical Music at Tufts University for two years.  Since relocating to New York, she has performed with A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire), Yo-Yo Ma (in The Silk Road Project), Philip Glass, Wyclef Jean, her teacher Ustad Sultan Khan, Blues Traveler, Ricky Martin and Bernie Worrell (Parliament Funkadelic), among others. She was appointed Carnegie Hall’s ambassador of Indian Music in 2006, where her shows at Zankel Hall consistently sold out. One of Falu’s most astonishing recent performances occurred alongside Rahman for President Obama and the First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House for their first State Dinner in 2009. Falu’s songs have appeared on numerous compilations (including Deepak Chopra’s The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire) and in numerous soundtracks (including Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut A Place in Time). She has released two albums of original and traditional music: Falu (2007) and Foras Road (2013).  These songs and live performances have been aired numerous times on FOX TV, National Geographic TV and NPR, and have been described by The New York Times as “East and West, ancient and modern,” by Billboard as “ethereal and transcendent,” and by Vogue as “a rare brand of timeless elegance.”

Here she is performing at the Highline Ballroom in NYC:
