May 4, 2016

design print in nyc1Now in its fourth year, NYCxDESIGN, the official citywide celebration of global design, kicks off today and runs until May 17. NYCxDESIGN focuses on the City’s cultural and commercial opportunities, elevates established and emerging design practices and increases awareness of and appreciation for design by audiences around the world.

“NYCEDC is proud to support NYCxDESIGN, an annual celebration that highlights the City’s role in the global design community and serves as a platform to showcase the talent of thousands of designers that hail from New York and beyond,” said Maria Torres-Springer, president of the New York City Economic Development Corporation. “As design jobs continue to grow exponentially in the metro area, New York City is a premier destination for designers, creators, and innovators to grow their business. I look forward to this year’s events and to expanded programming sure to come in 2017.”

“We encourage visitors and New Yorkers to experience the innovative and talented creativity showcased throughout the five boroughs during NYCxDESIGN,” said Fred Dixon, president and CEO of NYC & Company. “With expanded programing and new initiatives, the citywide celebration of design has quickly become part of the global conversation as a must-see event in NYC.”

The New York area has one of the largest numbers of practicing designers in the world.  Having increased by over 30% in the last decade, the metro area is home to over 44,000 full time designers.  Design firms generate over $236 million in City tax revenue annually.

In an effort to make sure New Yorkers in every neighborhood and from every background have access to opportunities available in the design industry, NYCEDC and NYC & Company have collaborated with diverse members of the design community and partnered with the City’s premier design schools to expand the NYCxDESIGN celebration to nearly 500 events taking place in all five boroughs.

For 2016, NYCxDESIGN is pleased to have Swiss watchmaker, Rado, as an official sponsor of NYCxDESIGN.  As part of its participation, Rado launched the first stateside edition of the Rado Star Prize together with WantedDesign.
