June 13, 2017

ImageNation Cinema Foundation is excited to announce their new partnerships with Power 105.1 FM and Urban Movie Channel for their 15th annual ImageNation Outdoors Festival: Six Nights of Soul Cinema and Music Under the Stars. The summer long festival offers free film screenings and live music performances in New York City Parks, providing a platform for films by and about people of color. The 2017 ImageNation Outdoors lineup will include Academy Award’s Best Picture winner Moonlight along with box office hit Get Out, Academy Award nominated films I Am Not Your Negro, The 13th, as well as Queen of Katwe with chess lessons for children and Sundance Film Festival Selection The Fits. Festival event dates will begin June 16th and will run through September 9th.

Launched in 2002 with a single screening for 300 people, ImageNation Outdoors has grown to draw nearly 10,000 attendees each summer. A founding partner of Ava DuVernay’s ARRAY, ImageNation hosts the only summer long festival dedicated to films and music about the Black global experience.

“We are excited to kick off our 2017 season,” says ImageNation founder Moikgantsi Kgama. “Not only is it our 15th anniversary, but we have the honor to of screening academy award nominated works by filmmakers we have worked closely with over the years. And, we have added a health advocacy piece that we are extremely proud of!”

This year, ImageNation Outdoors will highlight health disparities within Black and Brown communities. We will show the short film “90Days”, which addresses HIV/AIDS awareness and provide testing for HIV, diabetes, and high blood pressure. ImageNation will collaborate with health service agencies to provide screenings and educational materials.

2017 also marks 20 years since Moikgantsi Kgama founded ImageNation to provide support for independent Black filmmakers. In addition to the ImageNation Outdoors festival, ImageNation also curates events and film showings at their Harlem based Raw Space venue and hosts The Revolution Awards, an awards show that honors Black filmmakers, artists and activists for their contributions and accomplishments.

Highlights over the years have included the world’s longest Soul Train line, the 100th Anniversary of South Africa’s African National Congress in Central Park, talk backs with heralded talent such as Jesse Williams and live performances by Talib Kweli, Goapele, Les Nubians, and more.

This year’s festival will also feature collaborations with Harlem Week, Harlem Parks, Sundae Sermon and InJoy Enterprises. Each screening will feature DJs and live music performances beginning at 6PM followed by a film screening at sundown. All shows are free and open to the public.
