Inwood Tenants Living With No Heat Or Hot Water Say “Enough Is Enough”

February 4, 2018

Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez joined NYS Assemblywoman Carmen De La Rosa, NYS Senator Marisol Alcantara, Representatives from LIUNA Local 78, Tenant Advocates, and residents of 3852 10th Avenue in Inwood, to call on landlord Julian Rodriguez to restore services to the tenants.

The have been living without heat and hot water for months, while highlighting the specific conditions that have troubled residents in this Inwood building for years.

Last year, residents in 3852 10th Avenue were rushed to the hospital, after breathing in dangerous carbon monoxide due to a boiler leak. The building has over 300 violations and residents have complained of severe rodent infestations with no support from their landlord to make needed fixes. However, after several months without heat and hot water in this cold weather and more than 20 complaints to 311, the tenants are desperate and are crying for help from the City.

“It is unacceptable and criminal for New Yorkers to live in such precarious conditions. We demand that these essential services be restored at once,” said NYC Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez. “Something must be done about repeat offenders like the landlord of 3852 10th Avenue. Be sure that we will continue to amplify the voices of these and all tenants victims of abusive landlords.”

“The tenants of 3852 10th Avenue have had to endure unimaginable conditions for years at the hands of a neglectful landlord,” said NYS Assemblywoman Carmen De La Rosa. “Even with the most severe weather conditions, the families in this building have had to live without the most basic services of heat and hot water. The actions of this landlord are criminal and these tenants deserve to live in dignity.”

“Winter comes every year, but for some landlords, it seems to come as a surprise”. Said NYS Senator Marisol Alcantara. I stand with them tenants of this building and I call on the landlord to immediately restore heat and hot water. This is an issue of human health and an issue of human rights.”
