It’s Harlem Week 2015’s Last Weekend

seitu greatday12HARLEM WEEK 2015 comes to a close this weekend with a series of events highlighted by the Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Run hosted by Harlem RunCelebrating the Journey & Percy Sutton Harlem Walk: Celebrating the Journey, Full STEAM Ahead on Saturday, August 22nd at 135th Street & St. Nicholas Avenue.

Also starting with the runners, other members of the community will participate in a 1.5 mile walk through Harlem. Each year the walk calls attention to an important issue in the community. This year the theme for the Run and the walk is “Our Lives Matter.” “OUR LIVES MATTER” is a year round initiativeto bring together faith based, civic, humanitarian, youth, educational institutions, unions and media to address the never ending loss of lives throughout America.

Both the Run and the Walk begin at 8:30AM, and a new element of a Kids Run will begin at 10:15AM. The kids run has been created to encourage youth to be active and participate in running. Participating in the 5K will be girls in NYRR’s Run for the Future program. Run for the Future is a high-touch, high-impact summer program that fulfills NYRR’s mission by providing a unique opportunity for girls who arerising seniors in high schools across the five boroughs. Through their participation in the program, the girls learn about running, build self-esteem and confidence, and develop key leadership skills, while training for a 5K race at the end of the summer. Participants who complete the program and are accepted to college also receive a $1,500 scholarship toward their school of choice. This year, 46 girls will take on the 2015 Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Run.

After the Run and Walk, there will be a family celebration in St. Nicholas Park featuring a performance from the Jeff Foxx Band, DJ salutes to the Icons of Music including, James Brown, Michael Jackson, Prince, Chaka Khan, Earth Wind & Fire, Joe Cuba and more plus additional performances courtesy of TheHip Hop Hall of Fame & Museum.

The day concludes with the HARLEM WEEK/Imagenation outdoor film screening of “Finding Fela” in tribute to Fela Kuti on the great lawn of St. Nicholas Park.
