A new year’s resolution can be more than just an announcement.  Some of the most popular reasons for making changes in 2015 include spending less, saving more, getting organized and losing weight which tops the list.  To sum it up, all of these things tie into wellness.

HarlemRunJogSo what is wellness?  According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the definition of wellness is, “ the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal.”  It can help provide a sense of accomplishment even before reaching that New Year’s resolution. For example, during the fall and winter months, I experience the winter blues, but with daily exercise, I am able to overcome this feeling of sadness.

HarlemRunCoachRunning (1)Terrie Williams, licensed clinical social worker, offers more insight on how one can overcome the winter blues. “With cold weather settling in, the new year often begins with the feeling of a fresh start. But the winter blues can put a damper on things”, says Terrie.  “In the winter months, many hibernate and stay indoors.  And with the needed adjustment to less daylight, many can benefit from connecting with family and friends after the excitement of the holiday has subsided. “

There are a vast number of ways to embrace the opportunity to improve your overall well-being in Harlem.  From ZUMBA to yoga along with all the healthy eating choices, health and nutrition education is also offered by a number of organizations throughout the community. With access to all these options, you will be well on your way to reaching the top spot on the new year list.

We at Harlem World Magazine invite you to join us throughout 2015 as we share events, experiences and tidbits that will expose you to healthy living throughout the Harlem community.  Whether it’s Heart Health, National Nutrition, or Mental Health Awareness Month or anything in between, we look forward to sharing the gift of wellness.

Join us along with Harlem Gets Fit (HGF) for our New Year kickoff.  HGF is a beginners/feeder program run by Harlem Run. The kickoff event and informational session takes place on Wednesday, January 21, 5pm-8pm, at Harlem United.  Light refreshments will be served.
