Leaders, Progressives and Activists Gather for the Inauguration in Harlem

January 23, 2014

NYCC logoOn Sunday, January 26th New York City Council Member Mark D. Levine (D, Manhattan 7th district) will be sworn-in to office as the City Council Member for Manhattan’s 7th district at the South Hall of Riverside Church in West Harlem.  Riverside Church has been a monumental force in the political debate for equality over the course of New York City’s history. The Judge at the helm of the Stop and Frisk constitutional battle, the Honorable Shira Scheindlin, will administer the oath of office. Unifying the city can only be accomplished through ending polarizing practices like Stop and Frisk to the extent that all residents feel equally protected. Council Member Levine requested Judge Scheindlin to perform his swearing-in to send a signal that he will use his time office to fight for progressive causes, including an end to abusive Stop and Frisk policies. New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who is also a former Northern Manhattan elected official and a fellow crusader for a range of progressive causes, will introduce Council Member Levine before his inaugural address.

Throughout his career, Council Member Mark Levine has proactively worked with broad coalitions of community groups and leaders to find new solutions to critical issues impacting local neighborhoods and the entire city. As a bilingual teacher, he consistently used lessons learned in the classroom to benefit the whole family and the broader community, such as his implementation of after-school programs through the Center for After-School Excellence and by founding Upper Manhattan’s first and only community development credit union–Neighborhood Trust. As a Council Member, Levine has vowed to continue working closely with community members to implement innovative ways of improving all of our neighborhoods.
