On Wednesday, October 21st, 2015 at the YM & YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood, City Council Jewish Caucus Chair Mark Levine and Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez will join local and national non-profit groups to host a public forum on one of the most pressing issues facing the local Jewish community today: rising poverty.
…30% of Jewish households in Washington Heights are poor or near-poor.
The forum will revisit the groundbreaking UJA report, “The Jewish Community Study of New York: 2011 Special Report on Jewish Poverty.” The report found that 45% of Jewish children in NYC live in poor or near-poor households and that 30% of Jewish households in Washington Heights are poor or near-poor. Steven M. Cohen, Director of the Berman Jewish Policy Archive at NYU Wagner, a Workmen’s Circle Board member, and one of the report’s co-authors, will join the Council Members in a roundtable discussion on how to address poverty in the Jewish community and beyond.
The forum comes in the wake of the State Wage Board’s announcement to raise fast food workers’ minimum wage to $15/hour, a hard fought victory in the Fight for $15 movement that will have a dramatic impact in upper Manhattan and across the boroughs.
