Lincoln Center Great American Dance Film Screenings For Schools Coming For Free In May

April 7, 2016

Alvin+Ailey+American+Dance+Theater 1This May, in its ongoing commitment to making great art available to all, Lincoln Center will give teachers in New York City schools the opportunity to introduce their students to outstanding dance performances when it brings screenings from its new Great American Dance series, free of charge, to Harlem in Manhattan and the remaining four boroughs. Lincoln Center at the Movies: Great American Dance was launched in fall 2015 with spectacular dance performances, screened in more than 600 movie theaters nationwide, featuring four of American’s leading dance companies: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ballet Hispanico New York City Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet.  The student screenings are being coordinated by Lincoln Center Education (LCE), the education arm of the Center, which is celebrating its 40th year as a global leader in arts education and advocacy.

Interactive study guides for all ages and all grade levels are available for each of the screenings. The guides, created by LCE, are tailored to various audiences for use by elementary school teachers, middle school teachers, and high school teachers, as well as for families with children, after-school programs, and life-long learners.  The guides use videos, readings, images, and participatory activities to provide information about each company and work, including historical context, music, choreography, and design, to encourage discussion before and after seeing the performance. Two engaging and fun short video animations on the origins and physics of ballet, which LCE helped to create for TED-Ed, the youth and education initiative of TED, are also available to enhance the students’ experience.

Tickets are free and available exclusively to New York City school teachers to plan local fieldtrips. All screenings take place at 10:30 am. For the list of the screening in each borough, the date, and theater location, and to request free tickets, (while tickets last), teachers may visit: LincolnCenterAtTheMovies.org/FreeScreenings.
