Make A Gift And Save A Life With Iris House In Harlem

July 30, 2015

irs houses ingrid floywdWe just received an email from Ingrid Floyd, Executive Director at Iris house who will donate funds to by way our your purchases at Smile.Amazon.com partnership.

In her e-mail she stated that:

There are 1.2 million Americans living with HIV, but nearly 13% don’t know it.  Ending the AIDS Epidemic requires people knowing their status and getting into treatment if they’re positive, or taking stock of their own prevention methods if they are not.

You can help us reach thousands of people in New York City and New Jersey who don’t know their HIV status by making a gift to Iris House today!

One of the greatest services that Iris House provides to our community is rapid, confidential HIV, Hepatitis C and sexually transmitted infection testing.  In fact, in 2014, we performed almost 2,400 tests throughout New York City and in New Jersey: in our testing centers, at health fairs, private parties and on the street.

You will help young men like David.  He was 19, a college student in New York for his first year, and from a traditional Asian-American family.  They didn’t know he was gay, and he wasn’t sharing any details of his life.  He came up to us at a street fair to ask about testing and we offered to do one on the spot.  When he got a preliminary positive result, a member of our team went with him to a clinic and started the process of confirming the diagnosis and getting him into treatment.  A year later, he’s virally suppressed, and has come out to his family as both gay and HIV+, relying on the support of an amazing case manager here at Iris House.

A gift of $125 will cover the cost of an HIV test kit, onsite counseling by a compassionate member of our team, information about new trends in HIV prevention (including PrEP and PEP), condoms and lube, and in the case of a positive test result, we’ll even accompany them to one of our partner clinics to begin treatment. If you can’t make a gift of $125 today, consider a monthly gift of $10.  A gift of $30 covers the cost of the test kit itself.

Your gift will provide an even more priceless gift:  peace of mind.  Whether positive or negative, in the end, knowing one’s HIV status is a relief.

Testing and helping people to know their status is a key component of Governor Cuomo’s Blueprint to End the Epidemic by 2020, and Iris House continues the battle on the front lines every day.  When someone comes to Iris House for an HIV Test, they leave with more than just a test result:  we give them weapons to fight their own war against the virus, whether in prevention or treatment, and give them family for support in that fight.

You can assist David with a gift of $125, you can help by making a gift to support our testing and outreach to women, young men and others who don’t know their status, and for whom the act of walking into one of our testing centers is a success in and of itself. And you can go to the Harlem World Charites at Smile.Amazon.com partnership. and each purchase you make will assist Iris House in continuing their great work.
