Mark Levine And Ydanis Rodriguez Host MTA Press Conference In Harlem

November 14, 2016

mark-levine-and-rodriquezIn advance of the MTA’s November 16th, 2016 Board Meeting, Harlem and Uptown Council Members Mark Levine and Ydanis Rodriguez will be hosting a press conference at the 125th Street Train Station on Broadway calling on the MTA to increase the quality of service on the 1, A, B, C and D lines.

The call comes as the result of a recent increase in the number of complaints to the officials made by members of the community regarding lack of service and overcrowding on the subway lines serving the area.

Council Members Levine and Rodriguez will also be calling on the State to significantly increase funding to the MTA, better enabling the corporation to serve the 5.6 million people who ride the subway system every day.

Though the State has pledged to fund the MTA’s 2015-2019 Capital Plan to the tune of $8.3 Billion, they have yet to fulfill that promise. The Capital Plan is essential to addressing issues such as overcrowding and delays as it:

  • Funds the continued roll out of subway countdown clocks;
  • Funds critical Track and signal upgrades that speed up daily commutes;
  • Introduces new “contactless” fare payment technology, allowing for riders to enter stations more efficiently
  • Funds 2,340 buses and 1,450 new subway cars, including new cars to replace 1970’s era A and F trains.

Since 2007 subway and bus fares have already risen by 45%, nearly three times faster than the inflation rate and six times faster than averages salaries in New York City. This coming Wednesday the MTA Board is expected to announce yet another increase at the expense of everyday New Yorkers, once again leaving them to pay for inadequate service while the State has not upheld its agreement to fund the Capital Plan.
