Identifyin(g) & Signifyin(g): Harlem’s Queer Arts Legacy At The Apollo Theater

LafontaineWith its almost annual presentations the Jewel Box Revue during the 1960s and 70s, the Apollo was one of many venues in Harlem to highlight Queer culture and contributions to the arts and entertainment. From the Harlem Renaissance to the Harlem Balls, historian John Reddick explores the rich and influential legacy of Queer culture in Harlem, along with “Michelle la Fontaine” aka Charlie Calderon who will be performing as part of the presentation.

“Michelle la Fontaine” started her drag career at the age of 17, with his drag performances blowing up at the New York drag club, Escuelita. Michelle has continued to explore drag, from the makeup and dancing to the perfecting of lip syncing.  Michelle’s idols include Grace Jones, Beyoncé, Whitney Houston and Diana Ross to name a few. Currently a hostess and showgirl at gay nightclubs, she is the Dancing Diva!
