40f43f57925e8abd4294bb33b580fTrumpeter Eddie Henderson, an important protégé of Miles Davis, says more with a single note than most manage in an entire chorus.

In the ’70s, Dr. Eddie temporarily put his career in medicine on hold to join Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi band then released a series of jazz fusion records that have become acid jazz classics frequently sampled by hip-hop artists like Jay-Z. These days he most often heard in acoustic hard bop bands like The Cookers and Benny Golson’s New Jazztet. His latest recording, Collective Portrait, released earlier this year was a kind of reunion with saxophone legend Gary Bartz who is also featured in this quintet. The record was featured by Downbeat and The New York Times, as well as on NPR’s All Things Considered and was the #1 record on the JazzWeek radio chart for three weeks. Describing his playing in the Chicago Reader, Neil Tesser wrote, “His progressive, assured, and imaginative improvisations roll out in a glorious sun-splashed tone… he seems to dance through his solos, balancing his quick clockwork technique with bursts of bluesy soul.”
