The National Jazz Museum in Harlem (NJMH)—an institution in the heart of Harlem’s cultural district dedicated to preserving, promoting, and presenting jazz music…—today announced programming for the month of May which will shine a spotlight on iconic jazz musicians and a renowned author and scholar as part of its free public performances and talks beginning Tuesday, May 10.
Jazz writer and educator Greg Thomas kicks off this exciting month of programming with his series “Albert Murray: 20th Century American Genius” which includes talks and a birthday jam session celebrating the author. Murray’s body of work—which includes Stomping the Blues, The Omni-Americans: Black experience & American Culture and Trading Twelves: The Selected Letters of Ralph Ellison and Albert Murray—has had a profound influence on generations of artists, writers, intellectuals and critics. Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Vice-President of Education, Todd Stoll, will be a special guest moderator for “Murray Talks Music: A Book Party and Discussion.”

Christian McBride, a five-time Grammy award-winning bassist, NJMH Co-Artistic Director, and the newly appointed Artistic Director of the Newport Jazz Festival, will share personal stories, rare recordings and insights into the life of one of the most significant musicians in jazz—Cannonball Adderley—for the second installment of a three-part series on the saxophonist. This series, “Cannonball Adderley – The 1960’s” will focus on how in the ‘60’s, Adderley blossomed into one of the most successful and influential bandleaders of the era.

Finally, NJMH Founding Director and Senior Scholar, Loren Schoenberg, a Grammy award-winning saxophonist and respected author will host “Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald: The Verve Years”, a talk exploring their classic duet albums that many listeners have loved for decades and have introduced countless young people into the world of jazz. Schoenberg will share new insights into what makes the music continue to excite audiences of all ages.
