On Saturday May 24th we are very excited to be hosting an evening of cocktails and jazz in the crypt of the Church of the Intercession of Harlem.  Loren Schoenberg will be joining us from the National Jazz Museum along with the stride pianist Jesse Gelber and the Lucky Chops Brass Band and the evening features an open bar of high end historic cocktails.

Set on a hillside overlooking Old Trinity Cemetery and formerly a part of the Audubon family estate, the Church of the Intercession of Harlem is hailed as one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in New York. Completed in 1915 as the third and final in a series of churches constructed under the same name, the chapel was built in partnership with downtown’s Trinity Wall Street Church. With lower Manhattan’s graveyards already (sometimes literally) overflowing and burial space in high demand, Trinity insisted on the inclusion of a mortuary chapel at the new site to allow for holding of the deceased prior to burial. Later, in the 1920s, the walls of the crypt were carved out to permanently house cremated remains, making the Church of the Intercession the first in the country with its own interior columbarium.

In tribute to this impressive and historic space and as a nod to the incredible music and artistry that sprang from the theaters, nightclubs and illicit speakeasies of Harlem during New York’s Jazz Age, we’ve invited a slew of talented musicians to join us underground for a very special improvisational night of live music within the crypt. As in the Roaring Twenties, the cocktails will be flowing generously, the vibe will be elated and the music will make you want to move.

Vintage attire is encouraged; dress to impress!

10:00 PM to 01:00 AM EST with a cost of $75.00
