New Harlem Lead Organization For Homeless Street Outreach From Harlem To Houston

July 18, 2017

WNYC reports that a Harlem-based non-profit is now leading efforts to reach out to the homeless living on the streets from Harlem to Houston, with a $33 million contract with the city.

The non-profit group Center for Urban Community Services has taken over the contract as the number of homeless people living on the streets of Manhattan has increased by 50 percent compared to last year, going up to 1220, according to the latest federally-mandated survey.

The group’s CEO, Tony Hannigan, said it was necessary to step up the game.

“It’s incumbent upon us to try to, as the lead organization, to reverse that trend, and to bring some new services to bear on this and some new ideas,” he said.

CUCS will be leading Manhattan Outreach Consortium, working with two other non-profits, Goddard Riverside Community Center and Breaking Ground.

Hannigan said they’ll be looking for more alternatives to traditional shelters, such as safe havens, which have fewer regulations and where people who stay on the streets are more likely to go.
