When completed next year, the Marriott Hotel now rising above Harlem’s historic Victoria Theater, will accelerate the economic revitalization of central Harlem’s main commercial corridor on West 125th Street.
Built in 1917, the Victoria Theaters ornate lobby, derelict for a century, is being restored to its original splendor to serve as the entrance to the new 26 story, 210 room Marriott Hotel designed by Aufgang Architects. Also to rise north of the Marriott Hotel is an Aufgang-designed 25-story residential building with 191 units, half of which are affordable.
Aufgang’s design for Harlem’s first world class hotel and conference facility also includes office and performance space for non-profit cultural and community organizations.
“Restoring this important part of Harlem’s cultural history was a major objective in designing the new Marriott Hotel. This example of historic preservation and adaptive reuse is key to sustaining Harlem’s cultural identity as part of the community’s economic growth and development,” said Ariel Aufgang, AIA, principal of Aufgang Architects.
