The Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City today announced that it is activating its Fallen Heroes Relief Effort following the tragic killing of Officer Miosotis Familia in the line of duty in the Bronx on the morning of July 5th, 2017.
The Fallen Heroes Fund was established in recent years to help support the families of fallen heroes as well as the broader NYPD community affected by these horrific tragedies. The Fund is part of a widespread effort with the NYPD to coordinate support to organizations such as: the New York City Police Foundation – Heroes Fund, the NYC Police and Fire Widows and Children Fund, Silver Shield Foundation, and others, based on the immediate and long terms needs of the families affected. Mayor de Blasio and First Lady McCray have asked all New Yorkers to do what they can to support our NYPD community.
“Through the Mayor’s Fund and together with the NYPD, we are determining the best way to help Officer Familia’s family as we mourn the tragic loss of an officer who dedicated her life to protecting the people and city she loved so dearly,” said Mayor de Blasio. “Our hearts and prayers go out to Officer Familia’s three daughters, entire family, friends and fellow men and women in blue that she left behind. She leaves a hole in the NYPD community and we encourage New Yorkers to help her family in any way that they can during this time.”
“Officer Familia’s life of service will forever stand as a testament to her brave and generous spirit. We grieve with her family, and pledge to do all we can to honor her life and their loss,” said First Lady Chirlane McCray. “The Mayor’s Fund is partnering with the NYPD to help Officer Familia’s family begin to recover from this tragedy. In times of great loss, New Yorkers have consistently shown that we come together to help each other, and we will come together now.”
Through this collaborative effort, the Mayor’s Fund is collecting and will direct 100% of donations to local charities working with the families of the fallen officers, raise awareness and educate New Yorkers about various volunteer opportunities in their neighborhoods, and support ongoing programs that help bring police and community closer together.
“In her years of service, Officer Familia demonstrated what it means to live with bravery, grace, and honor, and her memory will live on to inspire us to do the same,” said Gabrielle Fialkoff, Senior Advisor to the Mayor, Director of the Office of Strategic Partnerships, and Vice Chair of the Mayor’s Fund. “The Mayor’s Fund and the Office of Strategic Partnerships stand prepared to use every resource at our disposal to support her family during this tragedy and ensure her life’s work is never taken for granted.”
“Officer Familia dedicated her life to serve and protect New York City families with courage and grace for 12 years. We grieve with her family and are compelled to support them, as she did us for so many years,” said Darren Bloch, Executive Director, The Mayor’s Fund to Advance NYC. “The Mayor’s Fund is working with the NYPD to determine how best to aid the family of Officer Miosotis Familia, and the NYPD community as a whole. We urge every New Yorker to give what they can to help Officer Familia’s family in these troubling times and to prevent these tragedies from happening in the future.”
