One Hundred Black Men, Inc. of New York (OHBM) received the 2014-2015 Chapter of the Year Award for Leadership in Economic Empowerment from 100 Black Men of America, Inc. at its 29th Annual Conference, “Gateways to Success & Sustainable Wealth,” held on Friday June 5 at the Hilton America in Houston, TX.
“On behalf of the Board of Directors and the members of our chapter, it is with deep appreciation that we accept this meaningful recognition of our economic empowerment initiatives from 100 Black Men of America, Inc.,” said Michael J. Garner, President of One Hundred Black Men, Inc. of New York. “We have worked hard to provide programs focusing on jobs and business opportunities throughout New York City and New York State, not just for our members, but for all those who might benefit from that information,” Mr. Garner added.
The president was accompanied to the Annual Conference by Sofia Gonzalez, a year-old 17 junior at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School; Frederick Torres an 18 year-old senior at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School; Mohamed Diomande, an 18 year-old senior at John Bowne High School; Oriana Shi, a year-old 17 junior at Susan E. Wagner High School; and, Geidily Beaton a year-old 16 junior at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School, all members of the Junior One Hundred Class of 2015 who won best Business Plan and Best Essay awards at the recent Junior One Hundred ‘Beautillion.’
Last year, OHBM convened its First Annual Minority and Women-owned Business Summit at Harlem Hospital. More than 280 attendees heard from procurement professionals from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), Dormitory Authority of New York (DASNY), NYC Comptroller’s Office, NYC Department of Small Business Services, NYC School Construction Authority, NYC Department of Design and Construction, the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey, Con Edison and Estee Lauder.
“These government, public utility and private organizations represent billions of dollars in contract opportunities and OHBM facilitated a very successful event,” said Mr. Garner.
Additionally the theme of the OHBM 35th Annual Gala earlier this year was Economic Empowerment and honored Global Head of Agency Sales & Services for Google, Torrence Boone; Duane C. Farrington, CPCU, executive vice president and chief administrative officer of State Farm; Carla A. Harris, a Vice Chairman, Wealth Management at Morgan Stanley; Harlem Congressman Charles B. Rangel, now serving his 23rd term in the House of Representatives; Amar’e Stoudemire, professional basketball player and philanthropist; Gary Smalls, “Mentor of the Year”; and Former NYPD Chief of Department Phillip Banks III.
