One Love! A Tribute to Bob Marley!

It has been 35 years since Bob Marley and the Wailers performed at the Apollo Theater.

The Wailers returned this year to perform One Love! A Bob Marley Tribute Concert in honor of Bob Marleys legendary debut at the Apollo in 1979 and to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Album “Legend”. The band currently has only one original member, bass player Aston & Family Man; Barret who was the bandleader for the original and the current Wailers! The band currently has only one original member, bass player Aston "Family Man; Barret who was the bandleader for the original and the current Wailers!  The band continues it worldwide campaign to promoting peace, love and equality through the message of reggae and Rastafarianism.

Third World opened the show performing their own classic hits, then went on to play back up for Maxi Priest who did a rendition of Bob Marley’s classic, (Jammin).  Bob Marleys son, Ky-Mani Marley sang (I Shot The Sheriff).  Ms. Lauryn Hill made a surprise guest appearance causing the crowd to erupt with cheers as she came on stage!  She too did an amazing performance singing (Africa) and (Is This Love).

It was a great evening of music celebration.  I can only imagine being there in person 35 years ago to feel the energy in the Apollo as the building shook with people dancing as it was described to me the very next day by two of my friends who were there…

Harlem World had a chance to sit down before the show to talk with Dwayne “Danglin” Anglin, the Wailers lead singer and band spokesman since 2010.  During the interview, he talked about his responsibility as lead singer of the Wailers and the cultural and historical significance for him to be in Harlem performing at the Apollo.
