Police Athletic League Awards Ceremony Celebrates Recipients From Harlem To Houston

May 16, 2017

On May 3, 2017, Police Athletic League children, families, friends and supporters gathered at the PAL Ptl. William A. Duncan Center, 552 West 52nd Street in Manhattan, to celebrate the recipients of the Robert J. McGuire Scholarships. Fred Wilpon, and PAL Board members Robert J. McGuire and Tony Danza joined Frederick Watts, PAL Executive Director, to present the awards to the PAL students.

“When Fred Wilpon established the Scholarship, he did so in honor of Robert J. McGuire and his family for their distinguished and honorable service to the City of New York,” said Frederick Watts, PAL Executive Director. “Bob McGuire, one of PAL’s Vice Chairmen, has a legendary career including service as the New York City Police Commissioner and U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. He has served on the Board of Directors since 1978. We are proud to honor Mr. McGuire with this scholarship in his name, thanks to the generosity of Fred Wilpon, owner of the New York METS. We are grateful to both men for their steadfast and loyal support to our PAL children.”

Many of the young people who participate in PAL programs look forward to higher educational opportunities. Participants apply for Robert J. McGuire Scholarships to use in their first year of post-secondary school education. The eleventh annual awards ceremony highlighted their goals, achievements, hopes and dreams and applauded the efforts of these outstanding boys and girls. Introduced by their PAL mentors and role models, the 12 scholarship recipients spoke eloquently about their personal experiences and the impact the scholarship will make on their future.

The funds provide the young winners with a monetary gift from PAL to help defray the cost of their freshmen year in college. Winners must be participants in PAL programs for a minimum of one full year and provide proof of college admission and attendance.

New York City’s Police Athletic League is the first and finest civilian-run PAL in the country. Founded in 1914, PAL has served the city’s young people for over 100 years. PAL provides recreational, educational, cultural and social activities to 35,000 boys and girls annually. It is also the city’s largest, independent, nonprofit youth organization.
