Regulating And Grading At Eighth Avenue And 106th Street, Harlem, NY 1869

June 28, 2017

It’s regulating and grading time on Eighth Avenue, looking north from 106th Street in West Harlem, New York, 1869.

At the beginning in the mid-19th century in Harlem along with most of Manhattan the city started demolishing the areas hills, and thus farmland and farmhouses to make way for the city’s grided and level thoroughfares – the further north you went, the more hills and farmland were found.

This photograph shows some of the end results as a team of laborers to the left of the frame are excavating the west side of Harlem.
