Yesterday, Harlem Rep. Adriano Espaillat held his “State of Emergency: Small Business Summit” at Yeshiva University, New York.
He was joined by Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY), Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer, NYC Small Business Services Commissioner Gregg Bishop, and more than 250 participating government agencies, small businesses and organizations from New York’s 13th Congressional District.
“Many small businesses still find themselves struggling against reverberations of the 2008 economic collapse,” said Rep. Espaillat. “A flurry of legislative changes since the recession have only complicated the struggle that small businesses often find difficult to navigate government agencies, contract services, tax laws, and unexpected utility issues before they even get their business off the ground. The financial strain of rising rental prices and competition from larger business conglomerates only further exacerbates the process, thus putting these businesses in a state of emergency. It is my hope that the Small Business Summit provided guidance to small businesses as they are charting their courses through tricky waters, helping them grow efficiently and maximally, and to ultimately reenergize New York City’s small business community and spur economic growth.”
“On the Small Business Committee, Adriano Espaillat has been a tireless partner in helping advance New York small businesses’ interests,” said Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY), Ranking Democrat, House Small Business Committee. “In particular, his bill to authorize a Growth Accelerator Fund Competition will foster opportunity among high-technology firms and in traditionally disadvantaged communities. Yesterday’s event was a great opportunity to hear firsthand from New York entrepreneurs and I look forward to incorporating their input going forward in Washington.”
“Small businesses need help from every level of government,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer. “There’s no silver bullet, but there are many good ideas – ideas that we need to work together to turn into action.”
