Replacement Named For East Harlem Principal Who Was Forced Out By Parent Protests

June 1, 2017

Education Department officials have named a replacement principal for a progressive East Harlem school where angry parents forced the departure of an unpopular former principal in May, 2017.

An email sent Thursday to parents of kids at Central Park East I announced that former Brooklyn Public School 10 assistant principal Gabriel Feldberg would assume leadership of CPE1 as acting interim principal as of June 1, 2017.

Education Department officials confirmed that former CPE1 principal Monika Garg remained on the city payroll but wouldn’t say what her new assignment is.

Feldberg is a veteran educator who has worked in a variety of roles in the public schools over his 25-year career in the system. He worked at P.S. 10 since 2012, serving as an administrator at the popular Park Slope school.

Feldman said he’s excited about his new role.

“I am eager to join the CPE1 community and look forward to adding to its long tradition of progressive education principles, rigorous practices, and social emotional growth,” Feldman said.

Former CPE1 principal Garg was removed her post after clashes with teachers and parents got so bad that parents staged an overnight sit-in at the school and dozens of families boycotted class on May 5, 2017, in protest.

Parents warily welcomed Garg’s replacement.

“We welcome him and we want to see how he does,” said Jennifer Roesch, a CPE1 parent activist whose son attends third grade at the school. “Our focus remains vigilant in ensuring the new principal is someone dedicated and passionate about progressive education.”
