Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II And N. Carolina NAACP President Leads “Moral Monday”

Rev. William BarberThe Riverside Church announced today that Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, president of the North Carolina NAACP and the catalyzing force behind the “Moral Monday” civil disobedience protests responding to Republican voter suppression efforts in North Carolina. He will serve as guest preacher during Palm Sunday service (April 13) at 10:45 a.m. in the Nave of the historic church, located at 490 Riverside Drive (bet. 120th & 122nd Sts.), Morningside Heights.

“The effectiveness of Rev. Dr. Barber’s organization of the Moral Monday Movement lifts him into the ranks of national civil rights leadership,” said The Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes Jr., Senior Minister Emeritus of Riverside.  “He provides the theological rationale for calling the nation to justice, equality and compassion through his powerful preaching and extraordinary coalition building skills.  Riversiders will find his to be one of the voices we’ve been waiting to hear for a long time.”

Rev. Barber’s appearance on Palm Sunday is part of a new church-wide initiative to address the growing economic disparities hurting so many U.S. citizens and threatening the nation’s future.  During the service his sermon will explore the necessity of a moral witness on the weightier matters: Justice, Mercy and Faithfulness.  Following service Rev. Barber will lead a talk-back session discussing his sermon and various issues plaguing the country and its communities.

Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II is President of the North Carolina NAACP and convener of the Historic Thousands on Jones Street (HKonJ) Peoples Assembly Coalition, a broad alliance of more than 140 progressive organizations.  In opposition to regressive policies pushed by North Carolina’s governor and state legislature, including draconian cuts to Medicaid, unemployment benefits, and public education funding, Dr. Barber mobilized the Forward Together Moral Monday Movement.  This multi-racial, multi-generational grassroots movement inspired thousands for civil disobedience protests at the NC General Assembly the people’s house and around the state — and this year have spread to Georgia and South Carolina.

Prophetic Voices” at The Riverside Church is a dynamic speaker series created to serve as a platform to address economic justice issues plaguing our nation. One Sunday each month, Riverside will welcome a special guest speaker who is the foremost authority on issues ranging from education inequality and immigration to healthcare and low-wage workers.  Riverside’s aim is to not limit our view or our message, but to serve as a powerful moral voice to our nation’s most pressing problems.
