RWDSU President Stuart Applebaum Statement On The Closure Of Car Wash Uptown

March 29, 2017

This week, the Soft Touch Car Wash in Inwood, Manhattan closed; nearly a year after a $1.65 million settlement was won for workers who had their wages stolen, resulting in the business filing for bankruptcy. President Stuart Appelbaum of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), which represents car wash workers at ten New York City businesses responded saying:

“Any car wash that can only operate by stealing from workers shouldn’t be in business at all,” said, Stuart Appelbaum, President, Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). “Our carwashheros at ten different businesses have proven that car washes can be successful while paying their workers fairly. This car wash closing was part of a criminal enterprise that has ripped off workers for years. What is clear from this closure today is that wage theft is still endemic in the car wash industry – it hurts workers and puts unfair pressure on operators who are doing the right thing.”
