The Spring 2016 Harlem Adult Education Conference–organized by The City College of New York – Continuing and Professional Studies, Harlem YMCA Literacy Zone, New York Public Library – Upper Manhattan Adult Learning Centers, and Total Equity Now–will take place on Friday, May 6, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Harlem YMCA, 180 West 135th Street, New York, NY.

With four successful semiannual conferences under our belts, conference co-organizers are excited to welcome high-quality, inquiry-based workshop proposals from Harlem-based adult educators, learners, administrators, and researchers.

Workshop proposals are due by Friday, February 12, 2016.

CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

The primary goal of the semiannual Harlem Adult Education Conference (HAEC) is to facilitate the community-based exchange of tools, strategies, and research among members of Harlem’s adult-education community in order to build stronger connections and expand learning opportunities.

The theme of our Spring 2016 conference, “Adult Education in 2016: In Search of Pathways to College, a Career, and a Better World,” reflects three of the primary goals that drive adult learners and their teachers.

Workshop facilitators are the very heart of the Harlem Adult Education Conference. Instead of lecture-centered sessions. Instead of lecture-centered sessions, HAEC workshop facilitators structure and guide peer-to-peer learning experiences, ensuring all participants meaningful opportunities to both offer and acquire useful, solution-oriented information.

In the spirit of meaningful collaboration, leadership development, and nonhierarchical learning, we encourage prospective facilitators to consider including one or more learners as co-facilitators.
