“From my first day as a member of the Assembly, Keith has been someone I look up to as a leader,” Heastie said in a statement.

Wright last year briefly sought the Assembly speakership Heastie (in almost Heisman pose above) ultimately won after Sheldon Silver resigned following his arrest on federal corruption charges.

Two years ago, the Bronx Democratic Committee that Heastie then headed backed Espaillat over Rangel in the Democratic primary.

Once a predominantly black district, Rangel’s district now runs from Harlem into the Bronx and is mostly Hispanic.

Much of the Harlem establishment has backed Wright’s congressional run, including former Gov. David Paterson and ex-Mayor David Dinkins.
