A statement by Harlem City Council speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito regarding Executive Order on U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.
In her statement she said:
After Wednesday’s blatant attacks on our immigrant communities, President Trump just doubled down on his divisive policies by putting forward an Executive Order that does nothing but exacerbate worldwide humanitarian crises and further the racial divides in our nation by fueling Islamophobia. Restricting refugees isn’t just an abstract mandate—it means depriving families fleeing persecution and violence of their basic human rights. Turning our backs on our Muslim brothers and sisters is not just an act of cowardice—it is unconstitutional and contradicts the fundamental values of freedom this country was founded upon. New Yorkers can see straight through this Order: no play on words can disguise President Trump’s scheme to institute his Muslim ban. In the face of such reprehensible actions, this City Council reaffirms its commitment to protecting New Yorkers from all faiths and nationalities and to remaining a city that welcomes those who seek refuge. We continue to call upon leaders across the country to push back against the President’s reckless agenda.
