SU Maxwell School Gets Grant To Aid Schools In Harlem

October 19, 2017

Syracuse reports that the Syracuse University’s Maxwell School has received a federal grant that could total $2.35 million over five years to improve education for gifted and talented public school students in Harlem, New York.

The grant was developed by Jim Carroll, a Maxwell research associate professor, and Joe Montecalvo, an independent consultant.

“The achievement of disadvantaged gifted and talented students lags behind the performance of advantaged groups and minorities are significantly underrepresented at the highest levels of performance,” Carroll said in a news release.

Carroll and Montecalvo will travel to Harlem each month to conduct professional development workshops for teachers and provide technical assistance to them in their classrooms.

The project will focus on curriculum restructuring, teacher training, identification of gifted and talented students, using a computer program to analyze social problems and improving learning outcomes.
