“Supermodel” By Marella “Eliza B” (Spoken Word)

January 23, 2012

I
Was
Hanging around the way the other day
And someone had to say
“Hey! Are you a model?”
And I’m thinking to myself
“Hell Yeah”
But I never been on a cover of a magazine
Although I have been called beauty queen
But that’s about it
So I
Take a moment to think
Because, lately
I’ve had the tendency to go deep
Reminded of America’s imagery of how I’m suppose to be
My look, They took
Because I’ll rather imitate homegirl
On the cover of that book
On the shelf
Kept well for the eye to see
Defining beauty
Distorting my reality of what
It is to be

Me

Interrupted my thought
Because I remind him of
The image he was taught
And I bought the compliment
At the price of my thought at the moment
I entertained the concept of living with wealth
From my features
6 “2
And the walk is lethal
Although, my brain they’ll see through
But it is nice to think about
So I answered him sarcastically

“Yes, I’m a model..

I model life passionately”

And you know
I’m thinking to myself

“Damn! I just told him..”

But little did I know
I was really telling me
Every time I wake up
I model the life my ancestors gave me
The blessings that saved me
Watching my siblings grow
That, is amazing

I model
Growth from poverty
Those evil forces almost silenced me
Yes! I’m a model
I model life passionately

I model
The day I was born
Black and beautiful in my mother arms
Every time I step foot on that university
I model my ancestors that died for me

And when I cry

No need for stress
Because I model the strength not to be depressed
Not afraid of pain
Because, rest assure
When it rains
The sun will shine again
And for my friends
I model a listener

And for my man

I model your partner
Your ride and fly chic

Forget the dumbness
Because cutie on the front cover showing her bootie
Is getting paid for that
I wear this smile for free
Don’t let those videos show you how to love me

Because the image that there selling
Well, I’m not buying
And to tell you the truth
We all should quit our jobs
And market ourselves
Because deep down inside
We all can model life very well
Ask Oprah, Nelson Mandella, them Rocafella’s
Even Diddy would tell you “life is pretty”
See, you were born with your own dictionary
And for we
Our definition speaks
That we are models
We model life
Passionately
