Harlem’s American Apparel’s Charney Hit with Sex Slave Suit

American Apparel head Dov Charney has been accused of many things over the course of his sordid career: Masturbating in front of a reporter, ripping off Woody Allen, sexually harassing his employees. But this is the first time he’s ever been sued by a teenaged sales associate for sexual assault. Continue reading

American Apparel’s Latest Ad Goes Too Far?

Harlem has an American Apparel store on 125th Street (across from the Apollo Theatre). It’s owner Dov Charney‘s American Apparel has been steadily descending into pornography, now we think they have hit an all time low. Continue reading

American Apparel To Close In Harlem?

The Downfall of American ApparelAmerican Apparel, which so deftly captured the consumer lust of the 18-to-30-year-old market with its pervy roller-disco looks, is twisting by the ankles over the abyss of bankruptcy, and its leg warmers are unraveling.
Dov Charney, the company’s incorrigible scamp of a CEO and founder, had a designer’s knack for catching the trend-wave du jour by recycling just the right historical wardrobe references — Continue reading

American Apparel Front Turns Heads

Business

Boy how suggestive can the new American Apparel store front get? Well, as you probably know allot worse than he new one they have on 125th Street (between Adam Clayton Powell and St. Nicholas Avenues).

We took this photo right outside the store yesterday of the half clothed model, as heads turned when people were walking on their way to work. We’re not sure if Canadian owner Dov Charney’s formula of soft porn, Gap-like clothes and cheap prices is working in Harlem, but it’s unique. He has to have the only campaign where it’s about taking the clothes off the model, instead on the model. Also, their store fronts are painted with the logo imbedded in the painting, instead of the traditional flashing neon lights or just lights.

Slow Going on Harlem Retail Row

It’s been exactly two years since the controversial rezoning of 125th Street ushered in a new era of balls-to-the-wall gentrification for the famed Harlem artery, or so we were told. It played out a bit differently, at least in the short term, as the credit crunch deflated a number of high-profile projects—like Harlem Park on the east side, and a long six-story office/retail developmentWall Street Journal today. American Apparel In Hot Water In Harlem

Fashion

Just when American Apparel had finally settled with Woody Allen and thought they were out of hot water for a while, The New York Times’ City Room blog reports that a group of Harlem protesters are rallying Harlem residents to boycott the store.

The reason? Apparently the hipster uniform supplier failed to do as the Malcolm X New Millennium Committee asked and close for three hours last Thursday, May 19, in honor of the late Malcolm X’s birthday.

One member of the group claims to have “hand-delivered the letter,” but a spokesperson for the chain claims that the management of the American Apparel store on 125th street claims they never knew about anything. “Once the marchers reached our store in Harlem, the manager immediately closed the store.”
