Cheyenne “Canella” Baez (05.17.92 – 10.03.10)

On October 13th, Cheyenne Baez, 17, was killed after being shot by a stray bullet in the courtyard of her apartment building on East 128th Street. A student at the Urban Assembly School of Business for Young Women, Baez was a popular fixture in her community. Cheyenne’s untimely death generated tremendous neighborhood support and calls to action by local parents, clergy, and elected officials. Her family unable to pay for funeral expenses, private donations helped defray the costs. Homegoing services for Cheyenne Baez were held on October 13th, and included a breathtaking glass-enclosed casket led by a pair of white horses. Several artists have since designed a number of mural and photography tributes.
