In honor of Black History Month, cable network Showtime will premiere the Robert Townsend directed documentary “Why We Laugh” this month.  The film, based on the book by Darryl Littleton, explores the different styles and eras of black comic expression and how it has impacted American culture.  The film is narrated by Angela Bassett, and features comedians and cultural critics such as Bill Cosby, Dick Gregory, Chris Rock, Steve Harvey, Keenan Ivory Wayans, Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd, Paul Mooney, Dr. Cornel West, Kweisi Mfume, Members of Congress and many other pioneers and notables giving their opinion on the influence of black comedy on America. Chris Rock’s Funny “Good Hair” Film (video)

Chris Rock’s upcoming documentary, called “Good Hair,” takes a look at the world of hair and the obsession around it by African-American women. Apparently this is a $9 billion industry and includes products like wigs, weaves, extensions and relaxers. Check out the trailer below.

Plot: Chris Rock examines the cost, both financial and sociological, of African-American hair culture in this hilarious, Sundance award-winning film. Traveling from Atlanta to India to Harlem and everywhere in between, Rock tries to figure out how society determines exactly what is “good” hair.

The new movie is scheduled to appear in theaters on October 9th, in limited release.
