Cornel West, Randy Weston and Terrance McKnight Talk Books

Princeton University professor Cornel West, philosopher, author, critic, civil-rights activist and actor (two “Matrix” movies), describes himself in his memoir as a “bluesman in the life of the mind and a jazzman in the world of ideas.” Randy Weston, internationally renowned pianist, composer and bandleader, has performed throughout the world.  In an evening hosted by WQXR’s Terrance McKnight, West and Weston will take the audience through an improvised conversation that will touch on politics, race, the blues and jazz, and how their personal narratives are intertwined over time and space. Hope on a Tightrope — Words and Wisdom by Cornel West

The audacity of hope won the 2008 Democratic Primary, yet we are still living in the shadow of the vicious realignment of the American electorate, appeals to race and gender and the right wing propaganda that bases vulnerable groups…

Real Hope is grounded in a particularly messy struggle and it can be betrayed by naive projections of a better future that ignore the necessity of doing the real work. “So what we are talking about is hope on a tightrope.” Cornel West

James Brown: I Got That Feeling

I’ve always respected the Godfather of Soul for his contribution to music, his passion, and his work ethic. Brown was a true pioneer during the cultural revolution of the ‘60s, not only for his music but as an unlikely activist who recognized how his celebrity could help the African American community at a time when minorities needed leaders to look up to.
