Elizabeth Hubbard, Harlemite and Dancer Passes

Elizabeth Hubbard, a dancer, teacher and member of the M’finda Kalunga Garden, died on March 13, 2012 at her Lower East Side home. She was 76.

Elizabeth Ann Thompson was born in Harlem. She taught dance at Dance Theater of Harlem and was the dance mistress at Ballet Hispanico. She joined the corps de ballet at Radio City Music Hall — a pioneer woman of color in a predominantly white dance corps. Continue reading

Walter’s World: Dance 2.0 Dance Theatre of Harlem

The Dance Theatre of Harlem literally danced onto the arts scene in 1969. With just thirty students and one teacher, co-founder Karel Shock; Arthur Mitchell began what was to become his life’s mission. A Harlem native Mitchell recruited directly from his community and within two months the number of students had grown to over four hundred.
