Joel Morales’ death hit our community hard. The 12-year-old El Barrio/East Harlem boy tragically committed suicide last week after experiencing bullying, teasing, and harassment. There’s a way to get a trio of lively young women to forget there’s a movie camera around: Get them to talk about guys. Cheap guys. Guys who believe that the best romantic date spot is the McDonald’s around the corner.
That’s the setup for one early scene in “Up With Me,” an East Harlem story that will have its city premiere at the New York International Latino Film Festival on July 24.
