Is Breakfast Really for Champions?

Food

For some people, having breakfast is very important, for others its not even necessary…. Comparing my experience in High School to College, the decision to have breakfast was really based on the amount of time you had or wanted to set aside for it.  In terms of History, Civil Right leader and Activist Huey P. Newton felt breakfast was an important element of the day, an obvious reason why free breakfast was a part of the 10point system, administered by the Black Panther for Self-Defense available for all children (which the Gov. later adopted and made nationwide).  In terms of Science, studies have shown that the first meal of the day does increase the amount of energy the body needs to have a productive morning.  In Reality, everyone has their own take on why it is or isn’t important, so I am asking you HarlemWorld Blog readers, Do you think if everyone was to eat breakfast, we will would be much more successful or Champions at the things we do?

Dining With Miss Lil: On the Good Foot

Food

By Lil Nickelson

Happy New Year and welcome to 2010.  Now that we’ve indulged our selves through last year’s holiday season, I hope you are ready to getting back on track to eating healthy.  Instead of focusing on what foods you can’t eat, stay positive and try focusing on the foods that you can eat.  Aim to keep an open mind about food, especially trying new food and food you didn’t like when you were younger.  I didn’t like spicy food as a child, but my taste buds can handle and love them now.

I’ve come to believe that there are no such things as bad foods.  What makes food bad is how often you eat it, and how much you eat when you eat it based upon how much exercise you get.  The secret weapon to healthy living and weight loss is the right combination one two punch.  Just like we must eat to live well, we must exercise to live well too. Muddy Waters Cafe in Harlem

Event

From Harlem Bespoke

muddywaters

After a couple of false starts, the anticipated Muddy Waters Cafe (on ACP/7th Avenue and 129th) seems to have a more precise opening date which happens to be this month. We walked by yesterday and the store still had the brown paper up on the windows but this time had a small sign posted to update folks passing by. The thing that makes us wonder on the time line is that the store front never had any signage made or awnings set up on the exterior of the new building that it inhabits. As with many of the openings this summer, the store signs often go up first before the actual store opens. Let’s cross our fingers.

Dining With Ms. Lil: Back to Health

September is back to school time.  You should be very concerned about our pre-school kids to college students’ eating and exercise habits, just as much as they should be concerned about the same for the adults in their lives.

Two thirds of Americans are overweight.  A May 2007 report released by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene titled “Obesity in East and Central Harlem” states that: Continue reading
