In 2004 America’s barrier breaking ballet company, Dance Theatre of Harlem was forced to suspend operations. This was a considerable loss to the dance world; for over thirty-five years the company had not only filled a void by hiring and training ballet dancers of color, but it debunked the widely held belief that dancers of African decent were physically ill equipped to dance ballet.
