“Nieuw Haarlem” (Harlem) was the second colony established by the Dutch in New York.  Expansion to upper Manhattan was driven by property and economic concerns.  Prior to this decision, the area was a sacred site and was inhabited with clam shells from the Lenape tribes of Wiechquaesgeoks or Siwanays or other tribes.
