‘Harlem Views,’ The Schomburg Presents 23 Photographers

The Schomburg Center for Research and Black Culture, Howard Dodson, Director, presents the New Harlem Renaissance Photographers Exhibition, “Harlem Views/Diasporan Visions”. The exhibition opened February 1, and runs through June 30. The Schomburg Center is located at 515 Malcolm X Blvd at 135th Street, New York City. The hours are 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Schomburg Center Gets Angelou Work In Harlem

Maya Angelou’s paper trail includes a rambling, typewritten letter from James Baldwin, dated Nov. 20, 1970, addressed to “Dear, dear Sister” discussing everything from his new book to his feelings about death.

And one from Malcolm X, written on Jan. 15, 1965, assuring her, “You can communicate because you have plenty of (soul) and you always keep your feet firmly rooted on the ground.”

And a draft of her poem “On the Pulse of Morning,” which she recited at the 1993 inauguration of President Bill Clinton, showing Ms. Angelou’s changing the first line from “Rocks and Rivers and Trees” to the final, stark version: “A Rock, A River, A Tree.” Continue reading

The HARLEM Arts Alliance in collaboration with Manhattan Community Boards 9 and 10 presents an Arts Community & Community Board panel discussion on Wednesday October 6, 2010 from 5:30PM to 6:30PM at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. As part of event lineup for HARLEM ARTS ADVOCACY WEEK 2010, the keynote address will be given by Dr. Howard Dodson who has served as Chief of the prestigious branch of New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture since 1984.  Noted for his professional devotion and expertise in developing world’s leading repository for materials and artifacts on the global black experience, Dr. Dodson will be stepping down from his post in 2011 after 25 years of service.
