The Raz: How Sports Eased The Pain

By Marc Rasbury

There is not a person over the age of 15, who does not remember what they were doing around 8:45 am on the morning of September 11, 2001. That is when a large jumbo jet crashed into the World Trade Center Tower One. About 30 minutes later, a second plane crashed into Tower Two. In a thirty minute period, our lives were changed forever. Americans no longer felt that we were isolated from the hostile attacks that others around the world experienced on a daily basis.

The Raz: You Couldn’t Have Made This Up

Derek Jeter

Derek Jeter

They do not call these the dog days of summer for nothing at least as far as I’m concerned. I usually find myself yearning for the start of the NFL season or crying that the NBA campaign is over. I can’t get excited about baseball until the pennant races heat up. But thanks to Derek Jeter and the Ladies of the US National Soccer Team, I’ve been in a sports wonderland. Continue reading

The Raz: Tale of Two Shortstops

By Marc “The Raz” Rasbury

It is funny how fortunes can change in a (Harlem) New York minute. Two years ago, Derek Jeter was the King of New York while his Mets counter part, Jose Reyes, was being labeled an enigma. Jeter was leading the Yanks to their 27th World Series Championship whereas Reyes was nursing what was originally diagnosed as a hamstring strain that eventually turned into a year-long rehabilitation stint. The Raz: Not the King James Version

By Marc The Raz Rasbury

This is not the outcome we envisioned when the Miami’s Big Three agreed to play together. They were already thinking Not One, Not Two, but Several championships during their introductory press conference/coronation last summer.

However, reality slapped the Heat in the face on Sunday, while watching the Mavericks celebrate on the floor of the American Airlines Arena.

Hey Jets, Ex- Giant Plaxico Is Back!

Former Giants receiver Plaxico Burress strolled out of jail Monday wearing a Philadelphia Phillies cap and a big smile after 20 months behind bars on gun charges.

The Raz: The Old Divide and Conquer Trick

By Marc Rasbury

Over 30 years ago, Muhammad Ali branded Joe Frazier an Uncle Tom prior to their epic battle. Three decades later, another former Philadelphia Icon, Donovan McNabb, is feeling the same wrath. Ali’s allegation was based on the fact that he felt that Frazier was the chosen Son of the Establishment while the Greatest had been fighting the cause of the disenfranchised throughout the world.

More than Bragging Rights: NY Vs LA

It was funny to see all of those New York fans down in Atlanta cheering the Knicks on as they humiliated the Atlanta Hawks, 92-79, Sunday night. There is nothing like seeing fans, going back and forth bragging about their favorite teams which could get almost as competitive as the players. Continue reading

It’s A Crying Shame: Team Sports

It is bad enough that the greatest team ever assembled is showing signs of weakness by sobbing in their locker room after another humiliating loss. But the real tragedy here is that they are wasting the talents they have stockpiled. Continue reading

Charlie Sifford, He Came Before Tiger

By Marc Rasbury

As a report on Tiger Woods’ struggles at the Farmers Insurance Open served as background noise while I thinking about what I was going write about this week, the name Charlie Sifford popped in my head. You see long before Tiger exploded on the scene, Sifford was one of the pioneers that blazed the trail that helped Woods and other African Americans enjoy the game of golf. Continue reading
